A Thought for the Future

Today, I was looking at some college essay topics (still am, as a matter of fact) for the prepared speech section of AcDec (since seniors usually use theirs). There were some that I fell in LOVE with. Like I want those to be my essay prompts. Nao.

And a list for all you people:

1. Write a haiku, limerick, or short poem that best represents you. (NYU, 2009)
2. Write a short story using one of the following titles: a.) House of Cards, b.)The Poor Sport, c.) Drama at the Prom, d.) Election Night, 2044, e.) The Getaway. (Tufts, 2009)
3. Modern improvisational comedy had its start with The Compass Players, a group of University of Chicago students, who later formed the Second City comedy troupe. Here is a chance to play along. Improvise a story, essay, or script that meets all of the following requirements:
  • It must include the line “And yes I said yes I will Yes” (Ulysses, by James Joyce).
  • Its characters may not have superpowers.
  • Your work has to mention the University of Chicago, but please, no accounts of a high school student applying to the University — this is fiction, not autobiography.
  • Your work must include at least four of the following elements: a paper airplane, a transformation, a shoe, the invisible hand, two doors, pointillism, a fanciful explanation of the Pythagorean Theorem, a ventriloquist or ventriloquism, the Periodic Table of the Elements, the concept of jeong, number two pencils.
4. If you could balance on a tightrope, over what landscape would you walk? (No net.)

So all of you know, the U of Chicago has really, really cool and odd prompts (like opinions on Wednesday), and I'd really recommend checking them out.

And as a treat: You guys get to vote which one I'll write and post on here.

Then, I'll choose which one goes for the next contest :D (That hasn't been done in a while.)

So can't wait!

And a personal message to you guys: I still need a speech topic. You're welcome to suggest some.

Featured Writer

So I've decided to finally do something. So I've decided: feature a writer. From Figment.

So the first writer who came to my mind was Holden Meier. He's not too well-known. For a while, I thought he was a girl (I'm not the best at everything, ok? I'm really sorry Holden. Really). Then revelation happened.

But one thing was clear the whole time: Holden is a superawesometastical writer. I'd use other words, but I prefer to stay as clean as possible.

So to sum up what he writes (or what I read): plays and short pieces. And a novel in progress, I think.

But the most amazing are the plays. They are just heart-wrenching and funny and just so amazing. He manages to put a twist on pretty much any topic. It is all extremely deep and just... argh. So yes.

One of my favorites is "The Play's the Thing." In it, MC Sarah gets a very odd surprise. Here's Holden's description:

" It
would be reasonable to assume that Sarah would never meet her idol William Shakespeare, since he hadbeen dead for over 400 years and lived across an ocean. It would be reasonable. But wrong."
At any rate, you guys have to check it out. Not only that, but read it. And then sign up on Figment. And then "Heart" it, follow Holden, and start fangirling (or fanboying. Bit I don't know any guys who read this blog...) over Holden's work (then I'll have company. Sorry, Holden, I don't express fangirling too much any more).

Yupyup. See you guys after you've been transformed.

(And three(+) cheers for Holden, who's graduating/has graduated this year!)

Oh wow... A New Post!

Hello People who Read this Blog!

When I become sufficiently unlazy (that will become a word one day), I will publish my unfinished rant on the nonexistance (that will one day become a word, too) of probability. Or something like that.

Ambika suggested it when she read it some time ago. I hope you guys will like it-- when I get around to publishing it (aka. Not too much homework, having reread the HP series a few times over (as well as every book written by Rick Riordan), having watched HP7pt2... you get it).

On the other hand, I'm about to put up a new survey on the side of this post consisting of what new thing you want on here (as in this blog). Post any questions you have in the comment section!

Writingly yours,
Roberta

(Ahaha yes I signed this post. Fail -.-)
